Giant Rescue

'An injured woman was evacuated from the Giant’s Causeway on Saturday afternoon. The woman sustained her injuries while walking along the clifftop near Hamilton’s seat. She was treated at the scene by an ambulance paramedic before being transported by the Coastguard to safety. Coastguard rescue teams from Ballycastle and Coleraine attended the incident following a request for assistance from the ambulance service. The injured rambler was then taken to hospital by ambulance.'

Reminder of how quickly accidents can happen!

The Kilimanjaro Challenge arranged a training walk along the Causeway Coast on Saturday 20th October. Starting at the Giants Causeway and finishing at Ballintoy Harbour the 10mile route was set to take about 4-5 hours with a few stops along the way. One stop the team hadn’t planned on was when one of the group (who came along for the exercise and scenery) slipped on some wet grass and went over on her ankle. This was indeed a reminder that accidents can happen so quickly and even when they are least expected… on some wet sloping ground.

Not knowing whether it was just a bad sprain or whether the ankle was broken, the Visitors Centre at the Giants Causeway decided to phone for an ambulance which was able to park just over a mile away from the injured walker. With the help of the Kilimanjaro Team, the lady in question (and we wouldn’t want to mention Lorna’s name) was carried like Victorian Royalty on an ambulance chair across the field to safety. A few jokes by all concerned ensured everyone’s spirits were kept high. The coast guard was then called to open a locked gate in order to get a vehicle closer to the before the lady in question was taken to hospital for treatment.

A big thank-you has to go to the staff at the visitors centre, the ambulance crew and all from the coast guard. The team wish Lorna a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her on one of their walks in the near future.

PS: No doubt there will be a few photos online soon..... naturally with Lorna's permission!!!!

Lorna, you can blame Glenn for the above, he was the one with the camera!
