Kilimanjaro Challenge 2008

In November of 2008, a team of six from the Ballymoney, Coleraine and Kells headed to Tanzania in Africa in an attempt to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Standing at 5,895 metres (19,340 feet) 'Kili' is the tallest free standing mountain rise in the world and is Africa’s highest peak. The climb was not only designed as a personal challenge for each of the trekkers but also as a facility to raise money for a good cause.

The 7 day trek proved to be the most physically, mentally and emotionally challenging experience with four of the team successfully reaching the summit with two being unable to complete due to the effects of altitude.

The team Irwin (Holmes), James, Glenn, Kenny, Stephen and another Irwin (Adair) could not have completed the trek without the help and support of friends and family and those strangers who donated via the street collections. An amazing total was raised for BCFC Academy in Kitale, Kenya which has already been sent to help complete the building projects. Glenn raised money for the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice - visit www.KerenOwens.com for more details.

Please take time to read through the site, follow the events over the past two years and check out the photos of training walks and the trek to the Roof of Africa.
